The assessment criteria for the Masters International Martial Arts Federation (MIMAF) Instructor Certification are designed to move beyond physical skill to evaluate a candidate's ability to create a safe, psychologically sound, and effective learning environment. 

This curriculum is designed to transform black belts into high-calibre educators. It does this by bridging the gap between technical mastery and pedagogical excellence, focusing on the psychological and safety foundations required for modern martial arts instruction. This program aligns the practitioner with the requirements for the MIMAF Coaching Skills Credential Check (CSCC) Program.

CORE CURRICULUM PILLARS

1. Pedagogical Psychology: Understanding how students of different ages process information, develop self-regulation, and build intrinsic motivation.
2. Learning Environments: Mastering the "Backward Design" of lesson plans to ensure students meet specific learning objectives through active application rather than passive imitation.
3. Comprehensive Safety: Beyond physical first aid, this includes risk management, child protection laws, and creating emotionally safe spaces.
4. Inclusive Leadership: Strategies for teaching students with diverse needs, by breaking techniques into manageable, success-oriented steps.

INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION SYLLABUS

This progression takes an Assistant Instructor from foundational classroom support to a Master and Grand Master-level developer of instructors. In each case, practical requirements need to have been met before undergoing this program.

Classroom Management

Managing group dynamics, handling discipline with   emotional intelligence, and setting clear boundaries. Jnr & Snr Classes.

Child Protection

Completing Child Safe Standards training   and understanding mandatory reporting.  Jnr & Snr Classes.

5 Dan Certified Instructor

Lesson Design

Constructing 40-minute lesson plans using Understanding   by Design principles. Jnr & Snr Classes.

Sport Psychology

Teaching goal setting (INSPIRED goals), managing   performance anxiety, and arousal control. Advanced Classes

KEY TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

• Safety Compliance: All instructors must maintain a valid legal checks plus current certified First Aid qualifications.

• Practical Observation: Certification at each level requires a minimum of 20–40  hours of practical instructing per year, documented and observed via video presentation. 

• Psychological Readiness: Instructors are trained to shift from a focus on  "outcome" to "process" (skill execution and personal      growth) to foster long-term student retention.

Requirements: 

Assessments at each Dan Grade include a combination of the following:  practical teaching observation, portfolio review, plus theoretical examination (written paper). 

Theory (via written paper) needs to focus on pedagogy, health and well being, safety (including first-aid), martial arts history, cultural aspects, language, terms, syllabus & repertoire development, provide links to performance skills (separate from video of class teaching ability). Sports Management. 

1. Junior Assistant (1 Dan, min. 18 years of age)

• Safety Logistics: Demonstrated ability to perform a 10-point venue risk assessment (e.g., checking matting, equipment, and exits).

• Protocol: Accurate supervision of dojo etiquette and warm-up routines under direct oversight.

• Engagement: Use of positive reinforcement to keep students on task during basic drills. 

• Video presentation of class teaching – Junior class plus written paper min. 500 words

2. Senior Assistant (2 Dan, min. 21 years if age)

• Instructional  Clarity: Ability to break down a single technique into three clear,  age-appropriate verbal cues.

• Student Support: Documented evidence of providing "corrective      feedback" that is both constructive and encouraging.

• Self-Management:      Demonstration of consistent professional conduct and punctuality. 

• Video presentation of class teaching – junior class plus written paper min. 750 words

3. Lead Assistant (3 Dan)

• Group Dynamics: Successful management of a classroom "transition"      (e.g., moving from individual drills to partner work) without losing student focus.

• Conflict Resolution: Case-study simulation of handling a minor      student-to-student disagreement using de-escalation.

• Emergency Preparedness: Passing a simulated first-aid response test specifically      for common martial arts injuries.

• Video      presentation of class teaching – junior class plus written paper min. 1,000 words

4. Instructor (Provisional Registration - 4 Dan)

• Child Safety Mastery: Mastery of Child Safe Standards as evidenced by passing a comprehensive legal and ethical exam.

• Observation: Completion of 40 hours of supervised instruction with a signed mentor log.

• Legal Literacy: Explaining the "Duty of Care" and mandatory reporting requirements for the federation. 

• Video presentation of class teaching – junior class and senior class plus      written paper min. 1500 words

5. Certified Instructor (5 Dan)

• Lesson Architecture: Submission of a 4-week lesson block that demonstrates "Scaffolded Learning" (skills building on one another).

• Active Instruction: 30-minute solo teaching assessment evaluated on student safety, participation levels, and objective achievement.

• Psychology Basics: Written exam on identifying different learning styles (Visual,      Auditory, Kinaesthetic) and adapting drills for each. 

• Video presentation of class teaching – junior class and senior class plus written paper min. 2000 words

6. Senior Instructor (6 Dan)

• Performance Psychology: Creation of a "Performance Plan" that helps a student manage competition anxiety or grading stress.

• Goal Setting: Documented use of SMART goals with students to track progress over a set training period.

• Advanced Safety: Development of a school-wide Risk and Emergency Management Plan. 

• Video presentation of class teaching – junior class and senior class plus written paper                                                          min. 3000 words

7. Master Instructor (7 Dan) IIS

• Curriculum Design: Full review and redesign of a belt-specific syllabus to align with modern sports science principles.

• Public Speaking: Video/PowerPoint Presentation to students/parents on the "Mental Benefits of Martial Arts Training".

• Mentorship: Successful initial training of advanced students – junior &/or senior students.

• Video presentation of class teaching – junior class and senior class –      advanced students plus written paper min. 5000 words.

8. Senior Master (8 Dan) MIIS

• Inclusive Practice: Designing and delivering a specific module for teaching students with physical or neurodivergent challenges.

• Conflict Management: Evidence of mediating a complex professional or      parent-related conflict within the federation's Code of Ethics.

• Business Integrity: Audit of school operations to ensure compliance with      consumer protection and insurance standards. 

• Video presentation of class teaching –Senior class – advanced students,      masterclass plus written paper min. 10,000 words

9. Grand Master (9 Dan) GMIIS

• Assessor Qualification: Provide a paper on all aspects of fair and equitable assessment processes 

• Strategic  Leadership: Submission of a research paper on an advanced aspect of martial arts management styles and leadership .

• Ethics Leadership: Evidence of ethical contributions made to the development of MIMAF either locally, nationally or globally.

• Video presentation of class teaching –Senior class, masterclass, training masters plus written paper min. 15,000 words

10. Federation Grand Master (10 Dan) F-GMIIS

• Legacy Project: Creating an original instructional resource (book, video series, or program) and which is recognised by the federation.

• International Standards: Representing MIMAF in establishing cross-disciplinary safety and teaching standards.

• Lifelong Contribution: Verified high-level service to the martial arts community and instructor development.

• Video presentation of class teaching –Senior class, masterclass, training masters plus written paper min. 20,000 words

11. Senior Federation Grand Master (11 Dan) SF-GMIIS

• Legacy Project: Creating an original instructional resource (book, video series, or program) and which is recognised by the federation.

• International Standards: Representing MIMAF in establishing cross-disciplinary safety and teaching standards.

• Lifelong Contribution: Verified high-level service to the martial arts community and instructor development.

• Video presentation of class teaching –Masterclasses, training masters &      grandmasters plus written paper min. 30,000 words.

12. Distinguished Senior Federation Grand Master (12 Dan) DSF-GMIIS

• Legacy Project: Creating an original instructional resource (book, video      series, or program) and which is recognised by the federation. 

• International Standards: Representing MIMAF      in establishing cross-disciplinary safety and higher-level teaching standards.

• Lifelong Contribution: Verified high-level service to the martial arts community and instructor development.

• Examiner: Verified high-level service to the martial arts community & instructor  development.

• Video presentation of class teaching –Masterclasses, training grandmasters  plus written paper min. 50,000 words.

Core Responsibilities

The highest-level examiners typically oversee the following areas:

• Conducting Dan Gradings: Senior examiners are authorised to conduct high-level Dan Grade      examinations, sometimes globally.

• Upholding Global Standards: They ensure technical      excellence, discipline, and integrity are maintained consistently across all affiliated clubs and regions.

• Assessment of Master and Grand Master Level Candidates: They evaluate candidates for      advanced ranks (e.g., 7 Dan and above), focusing not just on technique but      on lifelong contribution and personal development.

• Syllabus & Curriculum Development: High-level examiners often act as "custodians of the MIMAF Curriculum & Syllabus," reviewing and modifying techniques & conducting the Institute’s Innovations Training Lab to ensure the system evolves safely and effectively.

• Mentorship of lower-tier Examiners: They participate in training, standardising, and      monitoring the performance of lower-tier examiners to ensure fair and unbiased judging.

• Ultimate Certification Authority: Rests with the Accreditation Board of the MIMAF Institute, the Shodai Sōke and Sōke and the senior board of Grand Master Examiners. 

The grading rubric for the MIMAF Instructor Certification follows a progressive scale.

Each level is assessed across four core domains: 

Safety & Legal, Pedagogical Skill, Psychological Application, & Leadership/Mentorship. 

Assessors use a 4-point scale for each criterion: 

Emerging (1), Developing (2), Proficient (3), & Exemplary (4).
