At the Masters International Martial Arts Federation (MIMAF), we have long maintained that rigid, time-bound grading grids stifle individual growth and undervalue genuine skill. True progress is an ongoing journey of refinement, transmission, and a profound contribution to the arts.
To further safeguard the integrity of our lineages, the MIMAF Grand Masters Council offers an unprompted, merit-based accolade system modeled after the world’s most prestigious independent standards of excellence.
In addition, candidates may also be nominated for this listing by the MIMAF Membership. (request a Nomination Form via the Contact Us page). Please note that the vetting for this listing is an arduous one. We seek to list only the very best practitioners in their respective fields of practice.
Unlike traditional rank advancements, a listing on the the MIMAF Registry of Mastery cannot be applied for. It may be petitioned via nomination but it is unrivaled as an unsolicited distinction granted mostly through an anonymous, independent scouting and historical audit process. The process is an arduous one.
Our mission is simple: to identify and honour ultimate technical excellence, instructional mastery, and systemic innovation, recognizing foundational pioneers and contemporary guardians of the arts, whether they are living today or who have passed on.
The MIMAF Registry of Mastery operates completely independent of conventional Dan rankings. While Dan grades traditionally measure technical time-in-grade and political tenure within individual organizations, they have unfortunately become heavily inflated and commercialized globally.
MIMAF stands firmly against the commodification of rank. Therefore, our anonymous council evaluates candidates strictly on the living reality of their skill, teaching mastery, and historical impact, not the number on a certificate.
A Shōgō designation from the MIMAF cannot be used as a stepping stone for Dan advancement, nor does a high Dan rank guarantee consideration. By elevating the Shōgō titles to an unsolicited, merit-only accolade, we ensure that true mastery remains uncorrupted by administrative bureaucracy.
To protect the purity of this distinction, the MIMAF Masters Council operates an entirely independent, dual-track evaluation process:
1. The Active Guard (Living Masters)
Living practitioners are evaluated covertly by anonymous senior representatives of our technical council. These unannounced physical visits evaluate the standard of the master’s active dojo, their personal physical execution, and the depth of skill demonstrated by their direct students. This status is dynamic and re-evaluated periodically to ensure the standard never wavers.
2. The Lineage Audit
For Grand Masters, the Council conducts a historical and practical audit. We evaluate their permanent contribution to the development of the style (such as the formulation of systems or preservation of core structures) and conduct 'ghost audits' of their dojos ensuring that their blueprint continues to produce undeniable martial arts excellence.
3. Nature of the Registry (Independent Assessment & Disclaimer)
The Masters International Martial Arts Federation (MIMAF) International Registry is an independent, subjective public service compiled solely by the MIMAF Board of Regents. MIMAF operates a peer-driven, unprompted recognition system. Inclusion in this registry is a merit-based accolade awarded at the sole discretion of the Board to highlight individuals who have made outstanding lifelong contributions to the martial arts community.
4. No Implied Association or Endorsement
Martial artists listed on this registry have not applied for recognition, are not paying members of MIMAF, and have not sought certification from this body. Listing a practitioner's public professional name, does not imply that the practitioner endorses, represents, or is formally affiliated with MIMAF. It also does not imply that MIMAF manages or governs their independent schools or style lineages. All information is compiled strictly from public domain professional records.
5. Intellectual Property & Brand Protection
MIMAF respects the intellectual property, trademarks, and copyright of all independent martial arts systems, organizations, and practitioners. Titles, accolades, and registrations bestowed by MIMAF are internal honours unique to this federation. They do not alter, overwrite, or claim authority over an individual's original style rankings, and which remain the intellectual property of their respective systems or grandmasters.
6. Clarification on Honorary Titles
All accolade titles are strictly honorific, non-academic, and non-medical acknowledgments awarded in the traditional spirit of the title ("Teacher of Teachers").
Institutional & Legal Notice
The Millennium International Martial Arts Federation (MIMAF) operates exclusively as a voluntary, non-commercial, and philanthropic association. MIMAF does not engage in commercial trade, procure financial income, levy administrative fees, or provide financial sponsorships.
All titles, ranks, and accolades recorded within this registry, including but not limited to the MIMAF Director of Martial Arts (DMA), Eminent Scholar of the Cultural Arts (ESCA), and Vanguard of Peace (VOP) are proprietary, internal distinctions of merit awarded solely under the fraternal authority of the Federation.
These designations are non-academic, non-vocational, and carry no commercial or civil equivalence.
MIMAF reserves the right to manage, update, or revoke registry listings in accordance with the internal standards and values of the Federation.
7. Seamless Opt-Out and Removal Policy
MIMAF values the privacy and personal boundaries of all martial artists. This registry is provided as a free public tribute. If you are a recognized practitioner and wish to have your name removed from our registry for any reason, please use the Contact Us page. Your listing will be permanently and completely removed immediately, with no questions asked and zero fees required.
The Shōgō Designations (Active Track)
Masters and Grand Masters are independently recognized through the progressive, traditional titles of mastership. Because these designations reflect active stewardship, leadership, and technical consistency, they are maintained through periodic, covert review by the council:
MIMAF remains a sanctuary for authentic progress. By removing commercial influence and self-promotion from the equation, the Registry of Mastery ensures that the highest honors in martial arts belong exclusively to those who have truly earned them.
